A traffic infringement notice suspends the apprehended driver’s license.
A traffic infringement notice is issued by the police when a driver is apprehended for drink driving, drug driving, excessive speed driving and drinking while driving. The infringement notice orders you to pay the fine indicated and abide by the suspension and disqualification period ordered in the notice.
There are drivers who disregard the traffic infringement notices and they neither pay the fine nor appear in Magistrate’s Court to challenge the infringement notice. They are called traffic infringement defaulters.
A traffic infringement notice suspends the apprehended driver’s license. It also disqualifies that driver from driving and renewing his driver’s license. He cannot report his driver’s license as ‘lost’ and hope to be issued a new licence. More importantly, the registration of the vehicle which the driver was driving at the time of his apprehension is also suspended. This means that the driver cannot operate or drive that vehicle as it is considered as unregistered. This also means that the driver cannot transfer the registration of his vehicle to another person.
Some drivers do not know this. They ignore an infringement notice and refuse to pay the fine. What happens to them? Well, if they are stopped by the police on the road and their license is run through the system, the suspension of their license and their vehicle registration will be discovered. They will then be charged with driving while license was suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle. The registration of the vehicle and the renewal of the driver’s licence cannot be made unless and until the Sheriff issues a notice that the fine has been paid.
Driving without a licence and driving an unregistered vehicle are major traffic offences that will result in further penalty. You will be further penalized with demerit points, extension of the suspension or cancellation of your driver’s licence, extension of the disqualification period and even three months’ imprisonment. Do not ever ignore or disregard a traffic infringement notice.
