Driving your car under the influence of alcohol is considered to be a very serious offense in Australia and the amount of alcohol level will determine the type of punishment that you will have to undergo.

In fact, there are two types of drinking and driving offenses that can be charged to you in Australia. The first case is driving under the influence of alcohol and the second one is driving with the prescribed levels of alcohol. If the alcohol levels in your system are more, than the consequences that you will need to face in terms of punishment would also be more.

Drink driving offense testing

There is a plethora of charges that are established by the road transport in Australia on a person who drinks and drives his vehicle. If you have been caught driving under the influence of alcohol and if this is the first time that you have been caught by the Australian police for such an offense, then you will be charged depending on the concentration of alcohol that is present inside your body. The police will usually have a blood alcohol testing equipment with them and hence reading the amount of alcohol levels in your body will not be a problem at all. If the police does not have the device to check blood alcohol levels, then you will be charged for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Drink and drive charges

If you are a first time offender and if your alcohol level is in the special range (0.02 to 0.049) then you would attract a fine of $ 1100 and a minimum disqualification of your license for 3 months or an automatic disqualification for 6 months. In case of a second offense within a space of five years, you will have to forgo $2200 and also need to suffer a maximum disqualification of 12 months.

If you are caught for drink driving offenses for low range alcohol level (0.05 to 0.079), then you will need to pay a fine of $1100 and minimum or maximum disqualification of 3 months or 6 months respectively.

For mid range from 0.08 to 0.149, the price that you need to pay would be $2200 and 6 months minimum or 12 months automatic disqualification and the severity of the punishment increases to $3,300 and automatic disqualification for 3 years if you are caught drink driving for the second time.

If the blood alcohol levels go beyond 0.15, then you need to pay $3300 for the first offense and $ 5,500 for the second time offense. Also, this offense would attract a minimum disqualification for 12 months and automatic disqualification for 3 years for the first offense and 2 years minimum disqualification and 5 years automatic disqualification for second offense.
