Do you have a question about criminal law offences?

Gibbs had been introduced to anabolic steroids in his teen years as a way of improving his build so that he felt qualified to join the police force.

Later in his police career he took to drug trafficking as a way of raising extra cash to support himself. When he was suspected of being involved in this activity his phone was tapped, which revealed the extent of his involvement in the crime. This was confirmed by the 4.5 ounces of cocaine, 2 tabs of ecstasy and anabolic steroids found in his home.

When it comes to Victoria’s state laws, trafficking in a drug of dependence is a very serious offence and can attract severe penalties.

Under the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 Section 71A (trafficking) in small quantities of a drug of dependence such as Gibbs was doing without a license, is committing an indictable offence, and can attract a level 4 imprisonment - up to 15 years behind bars.

In Victoria, you can be charged with trafficking in a drug of dependence if you are found to have in your possession above a certain amount of the drug, there is evidence that the drug has been divided up into smaller quantities or you are caught selling the drug. The penalties depend on how much of the drug is involved and how old you are. For large commercial quantities the offender could be imprisoned for 25 years jail and / or receive 3,000 penalty units.

Any conviction for a serious offence such as drug trafficking can be life changing as many employers will ask you to resign from your current employment. If you try to get another job and it is revealed you have been convicted of a drug offence it may be unlikely you will be offered employment. It also may effect any travel that a person wants to do in the future.

If you have been charged with drug trafficking you get a great defence solicitor to represent you in Court.
